Access is love

Our HeART(beats) Access is Love project aims to help build a world where accessibility is understood as an act of love, instead of a burden or an after-thought.

It is an initiative to raise awareness about accessibility and encourage people to incorporate access in their everyday practices and lives and was initially launched as part of the Disability Intersectionality Summit, 2018.

We’d love for you to use the supplied canvas to create a work using any medium you like (eg. paint, posca, material, photos, ink, collage…etc) and then donate the work to Crossroad Arts to be exhibited (and hopefully purchased!) as part of our Street View Gallery and Annual Giving Program fundraising campaign. Each work will be $40. However, if you would rather not sell your work, please just let us know.

The theme for you to respond to is:

Here’s some ideas to get you thinking!

Think about you or someone in your life who at times may require some extra support or assistance and see if you can represent that through your artwork.

For example you may give support to someone by driving them somewhere, you may have to assist them crossing roads, reading the paper, making a cup of tea or making something into braille or large print. You may push them in a wheelchair, build a ramp, learn some Auslan or assist in cleaning around the house. OR you may like to represent the word ‘love’ any way you like, perhaps a heart or some other way.

When you have completed your masterpiece please drop it back to Crossroad Arts at 55 Wood Street, Mackay, or if posting, please send to PO Box 1357, Mackay Qld 4740.

Please get your artwork back to us by MONDAY 15 MAY, 2023.

We will then hang all these wonderful pieces that celebrate acts of love and kindness on our Street View Gallery walls and project on our Window Gallery for all to enjoy!

The Opening Night is FRIDAY 2 JUNE from 5:30pm - 7:30pm as part of Mackay City and Waterfront’s ‘City Heart Fridays.’ There will be beats from a local DJ, nibbles and drinks and a chance to admire (or purchase) all the artworks! The exhibition will run until Friday August 4, all unsold works can be collected by its creator!
